Ikea blocks wage increases, finds the Verdi union and calls for strikes in several federal states.

Hanover / Bremen (dpa) – In the collective bargaining conflict that has been smoldering for months in the retail sector, Ikea employees in several federal states followed a warning strike call by the Verdi union.

Focus of the action on Tuesday were Ikea furniture stores in the north, as Verdi announced. The Großburgwedel, Hannover Expo-Park, Osnabrück and Braunschweig locations in Lower Saxony and Bremerhaven were affected. Verdi negotiator Sabine Gatz also named Magdeburg and Erfurt as affected places. The furniture stores were not paralyzed by the warning strike, she said. However, it was possible to disrupt the internal processes. About 54 strikers took part in a rally in Großburgwedel near Hanover. Verdi had also called on Ikea locations in Bavaria, Hesse, Hamburg, Baden-Württemberg, Saxony-Anhalt, Thuringia and North Rhine-Westphalia to stand out.

Demand: More money, but also more appreciation

Concerning the focus on Ikea, Gatz said that the company is a member of the Lower Saxony tariff commission and participates in the “nationwide blockade of retail companies”. The employees still lack an appropriate wage increase and appreciation for their good work.

The warning strike also sends a message in the direction of the collective bargaining negotiations taking place in North Rhine-Westphalia at the same time. “A serious, negotiable offer must finally be on the table,” she said. Verdi calls for a rise in wages and salaries by 4.5 percent plus all employees, 100 Euro more training allowance, as well as a minimum income of 12, 45 euros per hour with a running time of 12 Months.

In the collective bargaining round, after Verdi information already 31 of the 54 German Ikea locations involved in warning strikes. “At Ikea, the employees are also demanding a collective agreement that regulates the rapid digital transformation of the company in the interests of the employees,” said Verdi representative Maren Ulbrich. The German headquarters of Ikea in Hofheim near Frankfurt could not be reached for a comment.
