The cheapest half-liter bottle of water for 1, 35 Euro – or for 2, 14 Euro? According to ADAC, the price differences between offers in motorway service stations and truck stops are sometimes huge.

Munich (dpa) – When comparing motorway service stations and truck stops, the ADAC found some large price differences.

On average, the service stations were at 13 from 14 evaluated products are more expensive, said the traffic club on Tuesday. The price difference was particularly large for water, among other things. On average at truck stops, the cheapest half-liter bottle cost 1, 42 euros, at rest stops it was 2, 15 Euro. The cheapest sandwiches, a sweet-filled croissant or half a liter of cola, were around a third more expensive at rest stops Pasta dish with vegetarian sauce – the differences were minimal. The price difference was clear when refueling: In the test, E 10 and diesel cost at the rest stops on average per liter 26 or 25 Cent more than at the truck stops.

For the comparison, the ADAC had the prices at 35 Pairs from the rest stop and truck stop evaluated, the maximum each 20 Kilometers apart. While service areas are located directly on the motorway, drivers have to leave the trunk road to visit a truck stop.

Tank & Rast, operator of most German service areas, accuses the ADAC of “significant methodological weaknesses” at the survey. For example, the partly 15 kilometers between the rest stops and truck stops are too far for a comparison. In addition, the evaluation “fades out the strongly differing range of services from motorway service stations and truck stops next to the motorway”, criticizes the company. After all, motorway service stations maintained their offer permanently, explained Tank & Rast, “even in times of low turnover such as at night”, while truck stops could then close.
