Business in German tourism has been up and running again since summer. In order to make the industry future-proof, the tourism association DTV not only sees the future federal government as having an obligation. 2021

Berlin (dpa) – Tourism in Germany is increasingly recovering from the severe slump in the Corona crisis. Business, especially on the coast and in the Alps, went really well in the summer, said the President of the German Tourism Association (DTV) Reinhard Meyer on Tuesday in Berlin on the occasion of the German Tourism Day.

“We are also seeing high bookings in autumn.” The situation in city tourism is still more difficult, there is a lack of trade fairs and events. Meyer did not dare to predict when domestic tourism would return to the pre-crisis level and emphasized: “We absolutely have to prevent another lockdown.”

Meyer called on the industry to Price-performance ratio to maintain the balance. ” Raising prices to compensate for the loss of sales as a result of the pandemic is too short-sighted. “Customers are willing to pay certain prices if the quality is right, but it also has to be right.” From the point of view of the association president, the pressure to modernize has increased significantly due to the corona pandemic. Investments in the tourist infrastructure and in businesses are necessary.

According to the latest data from the Federal Statistical Office, the number of overnight stays in August was only 3.1 percent below August 2019. Compared to the same month of the previous year, which was marked by the Corona crisis, they rose sharply 13, 7 percent. Because of the pandemic, in some federal states an overnight stay ban for private travelers was in place until June. From January to August inclusive 15 percent fewer overnight stays were counted than in the same period of the previous year.

For travelers, vacation in their own country was the trend in Corona times. Meyer expects a certain normalization here, depending on the development of the pandemic. “For this, tourists from abroad will come again.”

The association is demanding a national tourism strategy from the future federal government as well as a federal government representative who is exclusively responsible for tourism. “Should rescue aid continue to be necessary in autumn or winter, the new federal government must not refuse to extend the short-time work allowance and bridging aid,” said Meyer.
